Mum enjoyed baking, especially cakes. When we were young she used to make a mixed fruit cake on sundays, often it was for tea. It wasn't uncommon that she would allow us a slice after dinner when it was still hot. The cake would last a few days, normally till wednesday when it would become stale and thrown out for the birds. Mum also made Jam tarts, usually with home made jam that nan had given for her and the family. These were often shared with our friends with small cups of tea as in a tea party, mum was quite generous in that respect. Mum sometimes use to make fairy cakes for her mother -in-law, usually on a sunday, usually dad, my sister, brother and I would pop them up for nan whilst mum was cooking sunday lunch. Sometimes nan would let us have a fairy cake and we also had fruit cake that evening too. Nan was very old and bed ridden, she was nearly one hundred years old when she died. Mum rarely visited nan with us as dad walked a lot and I do not think mum could manage the hills that well. As mum got older she did a lot of small speciality cakes, namely rum truffles and easter bonnets etc. Again mum did not believe in small measures her rum truffles were about the size of a tennis ball. There were always clean plates when mum made cakes
