visiting Bedminster floods of 1968

I can still remember visiting east street bedminster with my during my school lunch break after the night of floods. Mum collected me from school, my sister did not want to come as she was playing with her friends. I cannot quite remember where my brother was because it was so long ago, most probably in a pushchair. We went down over merrywood road and the first thing I can remember was the smell, I was ten at the time and awaiting or had just been in hospital. I can recall when we reached east street, all the shops were in darkness although it was day light. There was mud and tins all along the pavements, all the tins had had their labels removed by the floodwater, so you did not know what was in them. Me and mum went into some shops where they were selling all tins for one old penny, you could not tell what was in them, sometimes pet food sometimes best tinned steak. Our pets lived quite well for a few weeks sometimes on tinned steak. It was quite comical at times because whenever mum opened a tin for my dads lunch it was not uncommon for it to be petfood, of course he never eat. We never had a fridge then, so all food had to be eaten straight away or put in the small larder. Mum like most people came through a difficult time, it was a experience, something that mum made very special for me and I have never forgot. Thank you mum
