Before Christmas this was a great moment for my family,we never had a lot but locally we were revered for our guy fawkes. Again we very much had my mum to thank for this. Often mum use to pick up old clothes from Jumble sales that could not be sold, more often than not it was free. Whatever clothes she was unable to get were often old clothes of my dads, sometimes on loan from the post office if they were old, more often than not post office trousers. The top half of the body was an old jumper, sometimes we had old gloves too. Because mum was a seamtress by trade she always sewed the body together, which made it very robust. for the head we often use to draw a face onto paper and pin it to a sack. There were papier mache masks around then but mum said it would be cheating and we would get more money if we put more effort into it, how right she was. Often we use to find a old pram which was used to wheel the guys around. before we use to go out penny for the guying mum always insisted that we say please and thank you, this was also extended to friends that helped us collect. Mum imborned a code to us that extended friendships, if you did not share the same values you could not join us. It was not uncommon for friends to knock on our door in September asking if we were going to make a guy. Mum was always involved, not the collecting but the making. It's a shame we have lost some of our heritage in this way, because she certainly taught some values.
